When Next.js is the right front end for your PHP application.
Next.js with full SSR suits server-rendered web applications, portals and dashboards. Data, background jobs and long-running work are designed separately — SSR is not a backend strategy.
Usually a good fit
- SSR-heavy web applications
Pages that must be fast and indexable. - Customer portals and dashboards
Product-grade interfaces on existing data. - UX is the bottleneck
The rules work; the interface holds users back. - Teams with React experience
Skills transfer directly.
Usually a better fit elsewhere
- Heavy APIs and background jobs
Better as a separate NestJS or Django backend. - Content-only sites
Astro ships less JavaScript. - Admin-only back offices
Django admin is cheaper.

Can Next.js replace our whole backend?
Rarely. Route handlers cover light needs; heavy APIs and jobs are better as a separate backend.
What happens to our URLs?
Every public URL is mapped and redirected where it changes, before launch.
Can we rebuild the front end first?
Often yes — the new interface can call the existing PHP system while the backend moves later.
